Worst Magazine Cover Ever? (NSFW)

The fashion industry’s bizarro fascination with dead looking women continues with French fash mag L’Officiel Homme’s latest cover, showing Benicio Del Toro holding a naked lady who could well be his latest victim. So many layers of WTF.
Oh fashion, you’re just so edgy and cool and boundary pushing in the way that you consistently fetishise violence. Or is he supposed to be rescuing her from potential death from exposure? Either way, you only need to take one look at which gender is in the buff and which is wearing trousers to conclude that there’s some sexism going on.

  1. In what situation would a dude in a dinner jacket have found a naked lady he needs to carry? I can think of only two:

    1. Silvio Berlusconi’s black tie and misogyny dinner
    2. James Bond’s black tie and misogyny dinner

  2. You often bash fashion magazines – and often they deserve it, too. But, just a thought: ‘serious’ fashion has generally been and sometimes still is a place that embraces non-standard gender definitions. Men don’t have to be caveman interested in cars, but are encouraged to show an interest in fine arts, style, … Women are allowed to be strong characters and reinvent themselves. I’m not a big fan of Karl Lagerfeld or Chanel these days, but it has to be said: Coco Chanel was a pioneer when it comes to female liberation. I’d love to see you do a piece where you explore the upsides of the fashion world. It IS still a home to what lager society only sees as freaks. (Obviously I’m talking more Vogue and Dazed&Confused than Grazia here.) Surely fashion and feminism aren’t mutually exclusive terms?

    • to shophopper: please can you give an example of where women are allowed to be strong and re-invent themselves in mainstream fashion? cos…i got nothing…
annie lennox SET androgynous fashion FROM pop music

women designers are sidelined compared to men
female models are exploited beyond belief
fashion sets heroin chic/anorexia as a norm that is killing hundreds of thousands through eating disorders and lowered self esteem…

sorry to be negative, but the only positives i can find for female fashion are the breakaways, the upcyclers, the wearable art…
